A Family Tradition

A Tennessee house
built on relationships.

The Carlock name has been synonymous with automotive trust in Middle Tennessee for generations. Today, under Grover "Clay" Carlock Jr., that ethos extends to every consignment we accept — measured not in transactions, but in long relationships with the people who place their cars in our care.

When you consign with Carlock, you draw on access reserved for the only authorized dealer of these marques in the region — and that access translates directly into stronger offers, faster sales, and frictionless closes.

  • i. Market-driven valuations grounded in real-time transactional data.
  • ii. Editorial photography and copywriting by an in-house team.
  • iii. Indoor, climate-controlled storage with full insurance coverage.
  • iv. Concierge enclosed transport coordinated nationwide.
  • v. Title work, lien payoff, and DMV transfers handled in-house.
  • vi. Discreet, no-obligation valuations from a family-led team.

How does consignment differ from selling outright? +

An outright sale is a single transaction at a wholesale-adjacent price — convenient, but typically below true retail value. A consignment, by contrast, lets your car be marketed and presented to retail buyers under our showroom's umbrella. We earn a commission only upon successful sale, and the net proceeds to you are almost always meaningfully higher.

If you require an immediate transaction, we are happy to extend a direct purchase offer instead.

What does Carlock charge for consignment? +

Our commission is structured on a sliding scale based on the vehicle's value and complexity of sale, and is fully disclosed at the time we agree on a target price. There are no upfront fees, no listing charges, no surprise deductions. You see the net wire amount on the same agreement that authorizes the consignment.

How long does a consignment typically take? +

Most cars in our program transact within 30 to 90 days. Highly desirable, properly priced examples often sell in two to four weeks. Rare or specialized cars may take longer, simply because the right buyer takes longer to find — and we will not push a price down to force a sale we can't justify on your behalf.

Where is my car stored during the consignment? +

At our facility at 1599 Mallory Lane in Brentwood, Tennessee. Cars on consignment are housed indoors in our climate-controlled gallery, never left outside, never exposed to weather. The facility is fully secured with monitored access twenty-four hours a day. Tires are rotated periodically, batteries are kept on trickle, and fluids are checked.

Is my car insured while it's on consignment? +

Yes. From the moment of pickup through the moment of sale, your car is fully covered under our dealership's commercial garage policy. You may continue to maintain your own coverage if you wish, though it is not required.

What does the marketing actually look like? +

Each consigned car receives an editorial photo shoot in our private studio — typically forty to sixty images including detail and provenance shots — along with bespoke listing copy authored by our team. The car is then placed on our website, our dealer network's syndicate, premier auction-adjacent platforms (Bring a Trailer, Hagerty Marketplace, Cars & Bids where appropriate), and pushed directly to our internal collector list and prospects who have expressed interest in similar cars.

Will my car be detailed and prepped? +

Yes. Every consigned car receives a multi-stage detail prior to photography and listing — exterior paint correction, interior reconditioning, engine bay cleaning, and a thorough mechanical once-over. Major mechanical or cosmetic remediation is recommended only when it will produce a clear net gain, and never undertaken without your written approval.

Can I drive my car during the consignment? +

Once a car has been listed, prospective buyers expect a static set of facts — particularly the odometer reading. For that reason, we ask that consigned cars remain in our care once marketing has begun. If circumstances change before listing, you may, of course, retrieve the car at no penalty.

Who handles showings and test drives? +

We do — entirely. Every prospective buyer is qualified by our team before they ever see your car. We never permit unaccompanied test drives, and showings are by appointment only. You are spared the strangers, the tire-kickers, and the lowball offers that attend a private sale.

What happens if I owe money on the car? +

This is one of the most common situations and one we manage routinely. Our finance department obtains the payoff figure directly from your lender or leasing company, the buyer's funds clear the lien, the title is released, and the remaining equity is wired to you. The process is identical for both standard finance contracts and lease buyouts.

What if my car doesn't sell? +

If after a reasonable period the car has not sold at our agreed price, we'll have a frank conversation about repositioning. You may choose to adjust the price, allow more time, accept a direct purchase from us, or retrieve the car. There is no penalty for ending a consignment — we want every relationship to end well, even the ones that end without a sale.

Do you accept consignments from outside Tennessee? +

Frequently. We coordinate complimentary, fully-insured enclosed transport from anywhere in the continental United States. International consignments are considered case-by-case. The forms, agreement, and proceeds are all handled remotely — many of our consignors never set foot in Brentwood.

Can a consignment be structured as a trade? +

Yes — and in Tennessee, trade structures often produce meaningful tax advantages. If you have your eye on something in our showroom, a specialist can present a like-kind consignment-trade arrangement that captures both the upside of a retail-priced sale and the savings of a trade.
